Spain's population set to shrink

gradual fall is forecast for the next ten yearsPopulation forecast - INE Spain is set to see its population shrink for the first time in ten years according to the National Statistics Institute, which expects the population to fall by half a million in the next ten years. The birth rate is falling, saved in the past by many immigrants, many of whom have now returned to their countries of origin, while the number of deaths is increasing. From 2019 there will be more deaths than births, but before then the fall in immigration as well as the birth rate will affect the number. The population will see fewer young people and 1.4 million more people aged over 64, highlighting the problems over the future funding of pensions. The population is set to fall particularly in Cataluña, Basque Country or the Valencia region. The Padron census list has a population of 47 million now, but that is forecast to fall to 45.6 million in 2021. The National Statistics Institute also considers that life expectancy in Spain will be over 80 come the year 2020, up by two years for men from 78 to 80 and up by 1.5 years for women from 84 to 86. Even this year will see more people leaving the country than arriving in it.
